| Charles SPINDLER (1865-1938), trained painter and watercolour artist discovered for himself the technique of marquetry in 1893. He revived the spirit of marquetry by using it as a pictorial technique and not simply for decorative ornamentation. He is also known for his furniture and Jugendstil Art- Nouveau suite creations. His talent was rewarded at the Universal Exhibition in Paris 1900 and at the 1904 World's Fair in St Louis (USA) in 1904. Paul SPINDLER (1906-1980), a trained painter and watercolour artist, took over his father's marquetry workshop. He created Alsatian scenes as his father did. A great traveller, he translated African and polar landscapes into marquetry to comemmorate his travels. His mysticism likewise inspired such works as "The Elements" and "The Creation of the World" in which wood is elevated to revelation and song. |
