At the turn of the century in 1900, alongside Majorelle, Gallé,Horta …
Spindler created pictures of Alsace through his marquetry and furniture.
HIS WORKS
In three generations, from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day, the Spindler family has become a real dynasty of marquetry artists in Alsace.
As early as 1890, at the foot of Mount Saint Odile, Charles Spindler started a cultural and artistic movement which spread throughout Alsace,
across France and into Germany particularly, working towards the cultural revival of art along with Gallé, Horta, Majorelle, Lalique, and van de Velde …
A designer of marquetry (his famous marquetry frescoes of villages that every Alsatian must, of course, have in his possession) and of furniture
(the chair with splayed legs, the armchair with pull-out flap), fashion designer, painter, engraver, photographer, publisher of magazines and books,
Charles Spindler also participated in numerous international exhibitions – in Paris, Turin, Saint Louis (USA), and Darmstadt –
regularly obtaining the highest prizes for his furniture.. His work, notably by means of the marquetry workshop in St-Leonard,
was continued thanks to the creative activities of his son Paul and his grandson Jean-Charles, each using his personal gifts to carry further the amazing
venture begun at the end of the nineteenth century.
This magnificent book is exceptional for its wealth of documentation and illustrations, and appeals to a public interested in artistic fields, applied arts,
and the history of art between Art Nouveau and international influences. This work is an immersion in the profusion of art and culture in Alsace around the year 1900.
